Technology and The Benefits of Using It in Education

Far too often, we hear the media denounce technology. Almost every day, we can read articles or watch news discussing the negative effects of social media on your mental health, how video games can lead to a sedentary lifestyle, or how too much screen time can affect our eyesight. And while these topics are grounded in facts and deserve to be discussed, they can be rather one-sided and does not truly explore the concept of technology.
We owe most of the 21st-century conveniences we enjoy technology. It greatly improves our lifestyle and how society runs by leaps and bounds, but there is another space technology shines the most: education. Technology has been helping, is helping, and will help students across the globe reach farther heights and achieve greater accomplishments. Let’s look at how it positively impacts education in many ways.

Remote Learning for Everyone

With the current societal climate, we are seeing more and more remote learning being done. While this is an answer to a pandemic that forces us to quarantine ourselves, the concept of remote learning isn’t entirely new, nor is it only for situations likes this. Remote learning can be a method for those without educational attainment to attend classes as it opens options for unconventional schedules. It can also be a way for those living in remote areas to receive schooling, which is a serious problem in many agricultural regions where traveling is difficult. Another potential use of remote learning is for disabled students. It allows an inclusive format where even students who are not physically able to join the lessons.

Access to an Infinite Amount of Resources

Thanks to the Internet being a virtual space with an almost limitless amount of storage, many great minds of our generation have begun recording what they know and storing it on the internet while providing everyone access. From cooking to carpentry, from engineering to chemistry, there are millions of resources to look into. Many schools and universities have embraced this and have virtual libraries alongside their physical ones, providing their students convenient access to information that would otherwise take days to find. The limitations don’t stop when storing academic texts. There are thousands of books and resources discussing industry-specific topics such as PCB design and layout, jet propulsion, or even obscure culture and arts. You can say that the world’s information is quite literally in the palm of our hands.

Ease of Use and Accessibility

Almost everyone owns a smart piece of technology. Be it a laptop, desktop, smartphone, or tablet- these are all forms of technology that allow communication, sharing of media, displaying information, and more. These features make it a great tool for learning, as it can display all forms of learning media, be it interactive or not. Schools all over the globe have begun taking advantage of this as well, eschewing books and notebooks and veering towards tablets instead, making their classes a lot more streamlined as all of the information necessary is contained in one device. Provided that the local government supports the schools, this means that even those without the financial capacity to purchase expensive books will potentially have the same learning material as everyone- leaving no child behind.

Trains Students for Their Future Careers

Of course, with technology being prevalent in modern society, one needs to be familiar with it. Introducing technology to students allows them to master it, giving them a useful skill that will definitely be of considerable use, be it in their personal life or the workforce. These are the advantages of technology, something that education will not be the same without.
